There are thousands of Indonesian companies listed on Alibaba.com but how many of those companies are legitimate? It looks like you can buy anything on there from cell phones to air purifiers to bicycles to almost any other kind of product you can think of, at suspiciously low prices. It almost seems too good to be true.

I am speaking here from experience. I was recently scammed out of almost $1300 by a company I found on Alibaba that claimed to be able to sell me top-of-the-line, big name brand, road bicycles. After chatting with the 'owner' for a number of weeks, I decided to go ahead and send $1233 via Western Union for two bicycles. Immediately after the payment was sent, all communication ceased. My emails went unanswered and it didn't take long for me to realize that I had been a victim of an internet scam.

On June 5th, 2009 I sent $1233 to a 'Mr Hardi Hasan' (AKA Wahyudi Ilham) that I found on Alibaba.com. He was supposed to ship two bicycles to me via air mail. I was to have them within three days. After I sent the money to him via Western Union, he stopped replying to my emails and I did not receive the bicycles.
